Hill House, South London

An energy-efficient home with a view

Background

e-gg was asked to complete a low-carbon refurbishment with a ground and first-floor extension to a semi-detached family home in South London.

The design needed to optimise tremendous views across the city and support the various and ever-changing demands of a young family.

Approach

Framing views of the city

We simplified the external envelope and increased the insulation to improve environmental performance and lower energy bills, while offering improved air quality.

FSC-certified timber structural elements were designed to reduce the quantity of material used, and wrapped in sheep’s wool insulation where appropriate. Existing materials and equipment were surveyed extensively and either reused within the proposals or passed on via eBay or Freegle.

Outcome

The extension and refurbishment provide an elegant new space for everything from dining to reading to play. The extension benefits from extensive natural light and a strong visual and physical connection to the garden, while framing the wonderful views across the city.

e-gg were such a pleasure to work with: trustworthy, engaging, and brilliant at problem solving. They listened to my ideas and would gently let me know if they were a little too far-fetched, and then come up with a much better idea than my original one! They made what is often a stressful time pain-free and enjoyable. Our whole family adores our new kitchen space. I would highly recommend e-gg to anyone.
