Neill’s Yard, Sydenham

Opening up a family home in south-east London

Background

We were approached to design an extension to a house in Sydenham for a family with young children. Situated in a conservation area, the locally-listed house had been renovated not long before it was purchased. However, the kitchen was significantly undersized and there was no sensible flow to the arrangement of spaces at the ground floor.

Approach

We worked closely with the family to understand their needs and priorities, then developed a number of design approaches that would integrate these into the context of the conservation area.

After continued collaboration, we settled on an elegant, single-storey wraparound extension that opens up the ground floor, delivering a generous kitchen and pantry and increased living space. The beautifully daylit extension seamlessly connects to the garden, with a step-in plan that responds to the form of the existing building to create an outdoor room beside the new interiors.

The red-brick ‘cogging’ detail that runs around the roof of the existing building is replicated at the head of the flat roof – a further nod to the heritage of the original house.

To keep carbon costs down, the extension has been designed as a timber frame structure. Existing low-energy underfloor heating systems are extended, while an efficient cooling system ensures a constant supply of fresh air within the new spaces.

Outcome

The project is complete and the family are thrilled with the outcome. We have since completed a loft-conversion at the home.

e-gg were a delight to work with and we are extremely happy with our new extension. It’s a beautiful space and has completely transformed our house into a wonderful family home. They had some fantastic ideas and listened carefully to our own ideas and needs as a family. We would not hesitate to recommend e-gg!
